Still Rollin’ Stones – Rise Up Y’all!

By February 24, 2021No Comments

I am excited that throughout Lent, Pastor Steve and Pastor Jill will be exploring the connection between the Beatitudes and the call to “Rise Up.” Those eight blessings given in Jesus’ famous Sermon on the Mount do indeed uplift and “rise up” those the world perceives as “the least” of its citizens – those who are mournful, hungry, thirsty, persecuted, and insulted.

Song writers have long set the phrase “rise up” within inspiring musical interpretations. One such song is Lauren Daigle’s “Still Rollin’ Stones” which will be sung as we flower the cross during our upcoming Easter services at Clement Park. The song masterfully depicts Jesus’ “rise” from the grave through the black gospel technique of call and response. You can hear the infectiously rousing “rise up” gospel choir responses to Lauren’s Daigle’s melodic calls in the YouTube link below, featuring a socially distanced remote recording of the song. The full lyrical content is also provided below.

Beyond the spirited message of this powerful song, the YouTube clip encourages me because it shows that inspiring Christian music continues to rise during the pandemic and that we are not the only ones existing primarily in a pandemic-induced remote recording worship space. By the grace and blessing of God, our faith community at CUC will continue to rise now during the pandemic and also in the post-pandemic period to come.

Out of the shadows
Bound for the gallows
A dead man walking
Till love came calling
Rise up (rise up)
Rise up (rise up)

Six feet under
I thought it was over
An answer to prayer
The voice of a Savior
Rise up (rise up)
Rise up (rise up)

All at once I came alive
This beating heart, these open eyes
The grave let go
The darkness should have known
(You’re still rolling rolling, you’re still rolling rolling oh)
You’re still rolling stones
(You’re still rolling rolling oh)
You’re still rolling stones

Now that You saved me
I sing ’cause You gave me
A song of revival
I put it on vinyl
Rise up (rise up)
Rise up (rise up)

I once was blinded
But now I see it
I heard about the power
And now I believe it
Rise up (rise up)
Rise up (rise up)

All at once I came alive
This beating heart, these open eyes
The grave let go
The darkness should have known
(You’re still rolling rolling, you’re still rolling rolling oh)
You’re still rolling stones
(You’re still rolling rolling oh)
You’re still rolling stones

I thought that I was too far gone
For everything I’ve done wrong
Yeah, I’m the one who dug this grave
But You called my name
You called my name

I thought that I was too far gone
For everything I’ve done wrong
Yeah, I’m the one who dug this grave
But You called my name
You called my name

All at once I came alive
This beating heart, these open eyes
The grave let go
The darkness should have known
(You’re still rolling rolling, you’re still rolling rolling oh)
You’re still rolling stones
(You’re still rolling rolling oh)

You’re still rolling stones
(You’re still rolling rolling oh, you’re still rolling rolling oh)
You’re still rolling stones
(You’re still rolling rolling oh)
You’re still rolling stones (you’re still rolling, rolling)
(You’re still rolling rolling oh, you’re still rolling rolling oh)
You’re still rolling stones
